The American Marketing Association’s Marketing News reports that the United Kingdom has enacted legislation that severely restricts viral marketing. The new restrictions “make it a criminal offense to create viral ads, use brand ambassadors or blog while falsely representing oneself as a consumer.”
I can see the logic. But still, it’s a slippery slope getting the government involved in marketing regulations. The British at one point conquered huge parts of the world, and decorated the British Museum with the rest; I think its subjects are savvy enough to measure the veracity of toothpaste blogs without the Crown interfering.
